Digipak 2 - Analysis

This is the front cover to James Morrisons album 'undiscovered' It is a very simple layout, and seeing as it was James Morrisons first album it is a very establishing shot, which shows the audience who he is and what he looks like, which is showed by this close up. The plain background allows full focus on the artist and with the writing on the left side and in green, contrasts with the cream background. Having James Morrison looking down, is different to most other albums where the artist is looking up or to the sides, this gives the effect  that the atrist may be reflecting in his music or showing a more humble side to Morrison's personality.

This is the back of the album 'Undiscovered' it is very plain and simple again, displaying the song titles, copyright information and barcode. The font is in capitals and is the same as the one used on the front cover, the font and colour also suggests the artist is male. The image is very minimalistic and dull, it allows the text to stand out and the main focus to be on the artist and the front cover.

Shotlists and Storyboards

This is a photograph of our shot list, it has a brief description of every shot, its time length and the camera angle and movement.
This is a close up of our storyboards showing the descriptions more clearly.

This was a sheet with all of our lyrics on, we annotated them with our ideas and what we thought the origional meaning was. We also broke the song down and calculated all the timings of lines and verses, this gave us a much better idea of the shot legnths and camera movement.

Costumes and Props

Costumes

ALEX
As Alex has a similar style to what we chose for the costumes, we have chose the following outfits from ASOS.com based on the knowledge of Alex's style.

Skinny jeans.

Formal Shirt (Dressed down)

Plain polo shirt.

Stipey t-shirt.

EMMA
Our model Emma Yates has her own lookbook online (www.lookbook.nu/emmayates)
so we have taken the photographs of her outfits from that, it is exactly how we want her to look, classy and sophisticated but also sexy. She is perfect for our music video.

Props

Vase and flowers
These used in the opening of the music video, a still mid shot of the vase on the floor with the flowers damaged and falling out of the vase - the damaged effect shows there has being some sort of violence and the flower suggest it is something to do with a relationshipsor a loved ones.

Photo frame
This is used to show a picture of the couple also in the opening of the music video, which establishes the couple that are in the video and the relationship they once had. It is also used later on when the male in the video is lying on his bed looking at the photograph as if he is remembering what their relationship was like.

Digipak 1 - Analysis

This is the front cover of the Kooks' album 'Inside in Inside out' Their first album was a huge success in the UK and the beginning of a new British pop band. The cover is very simplistic, this is shown in the use of black and white and the framing of the shot. The bands motif can be seen in this shot with the use of acoustic guitars, amplifiers and drums showing their passion for music and being one of the few bands that write and play all of their own music. The mirror on the far wall adds interest and dimension to the shot revealing more than the eye would initially be able to see.
The text is in the centre of the album and is bold and very clear, the album name being in red creates a dramatic feel and shows its importance to the band and its importance to the album.

This is the reverse side of the album cover 'Inside in Inside out' The back of the CD usually displays information about the playlist and song order, the record label, and the copy right legalities -usually in small print. This image is almost a mirrored image to the image on the front of the album, although the band have been rearranged and the photograph is more out of focus in order to make the information stand out more. The blurry effect merges the colours and gives a more realistic, imperfect approach to the photograph. The font is all in capitals, simple and bulky which adds emphasis and reflects that the band are all male, and simple with what they produce. The layout is easy to understand, with an image filling most of the area, the blank areas are filled with information. The primary optical area is the area in which the songs are listed so the buyer is immediately drawn to this area, however the legal information has been placed in the 'dead zone' because it is considered less important to the buyer.

This image is the insert of the CD, it has been created by a collage of photographs which reveal one full picture. The image includes close ups of the band in what is thought to be their personal time, this gives the buyer an insight into a day in the band members life and make it more real and personal. The images are a mixture of colour and black and white, other effects are used such as colour fade and white wash, so that the images blend and merge together. All of the way across the centre of the digipak there are lyrics to all of the songs, the font is very small and hard to read, but does not distract the eye from the image which I think was intended. The purpose of the fold out would be to further the entertainment of buyer, show the band in more detail, involving their own lifestyles and giving more value for money when the CD is purchased.

Music Video 3 - Analysis

The Wombats - Moving to New York

I like the way the video seems as if its on TV and in parts when the video is going faster there is a fast forward button which makes it look like someone is controling it and it makes it look like time is flying past in the video.
The video starts of with showing all the places that the artists are within the video. I also like how they are always playing instruments in the places and the places on werid they are just normal everyday places for e.g houses and shops.
The lead gets introduced first and its a mid-shot of him in front of houses which you expect is his, the mid-shot lets you see most of him the houses and him playing the guiter. You then get introduced to all the band one by one, as they all walk past one of the places you see at the start of the video and all end up together at the same place. The lead then goes to all the places and you see him playing in front at one point his standing in the middle of a round-a-bout which makes it more interesting as it looks like his having fun. The whole band is then at a new destination and at first it starts with a close up of the drummer so you can see him playing but then becomes a long shot so you can see the whole band and background. It then has a mid shot so you can see the lead and a guitist it then 'pauses' on them in video. The next place they play at is the house, there is a close up of the lead singer, which might imply that it is his house and because its the chorus it shows him singing it,  at the next place is outside 3 garages but they kept changing colour which keeps it interesting there is a few close ups of the guitar, its 'fast forwarded' in the video which makes it look like they are there for a while.
The next part in the video it has turned to night and the lead singer is outside a shop playing and singing, you then see clips of different places around a town. There is then a mid-shot of all the band members playing outside of a place which looks like a pub or club with flashing lights, yet there outside. The next clip is as in a carpark and the way the band is normally set out has changed but the lead singer is still at the front as he is the main. There is a few close ups of the members which kind of helps the audience get to know them and helps them be regonised. There is then more shots of the band in places where they have been such as the busstop and outside shops. The video then 'fast forwards' to all the places they have been which recaps the video to the audience. It ends with the band outside the house then they walk off in different directions and it fast forwards to a black screen.
I think the video is trying to show the place which the band live and where they go, i also think there trying to show that its a bband who is trying to make an name for themselfs, as they are playing outside places and on the street and not in rooms with people watching them.

Group Changes & Details

In July 2011 we formed a group that consisted of 5 girls, we chose a song and got permission to use it - we then planned our video and gave eachother roles with in the group. However, when we returned to school in September 2011, 1 of the members decided to drop the subject completely and a futher 2 decided to continue the subject on at Kings Norton Girls School which left me and one other girl. We then had to form a group with two boys who were in a similar position to ourselves, we all agree on the song choice and have  got off to a good start planning our music video.

Recce

These pictures show the places where we will be shooting the music video.

Emma's house

This picture is of Emma's bedroom, this is where Alex is filmed alone when he is piecing together things Emma has done that has lead to her cheating. The spacious bedroom is ideal so we have the space to do all our intended shots, from extreme close ups to long shots, and movements such as panning and tracking. The plain white room suggests purity and innocence, which is obviously the opposite to the way Emma is portrayed in the video, but it could also clarify purication of thoughts and actions which will fit perfectly with Alex during the shots of him in the bedroom.

The stairs are going to be also involved with the cheating scenes of the music video, the shots that will be taking place on the stairs will mainly be long and mid shots, not revealing much on the place or character but making it clear as to whats about to happen.

Music Video 1 - Analysis

Ed Sheeran - One Night

I really enjoyed the simplicity of this video, it is always focused on one girl and all the lyrics give out ideas of what to expect of the girl. Showing the reality of how some lives are lived, is an eye opener of what really goes on and using the busy streets like what we are used makes it seem so much realistic and as the video progresses, shocking. Maybe an improvement would be giving more ideas of what is going on from earlier in the video instead of leaving it until later in the clip.
The clip does not reveal the artist at all, which is unusual but in this case I think it is effective because it leaves a mysterious feeling about the artist and even the reason to the story.
I think the choices made in order to make the video, were well chosen. As it is very simple the costume is very simple also, very dark and worn-out clothes add to the reality of the story that is been told through the lyrics. The whole video is in black and white which adds to the mood of the video also keeps it simple but mysterious. The video uses many cutaways all of which are smooth and hardly noticeable, these help to move the story through the day of girl in video. The way the video has been filmed, with a shaky hand and low angle shots makes it seem as though someone is filming this girl for a day, it gives a documentary type of feel too. I think this video is aimed at young people aged between 18 and 25, as the story is about a young women. The artist is a university student so a more narrow audience would be students.

Music Video 2 - Analysis

Rihanna - Rude Boy

This video does not completely follow the rest of Rihanna's music video, although she is still portrayed as a sexy, stylish, confident artist. Lots of synthesia is used in this music video, there is lots of bright colours and words across the screen flash up as they are being sung ect. "Boom, boom, boom" It is also seen through the dancing lips which occur when the words are being sung. We also see the drums being played, when we can also hear the beat.
The dance routines in this video is the main attraction for the audience, it is a performance based video and does not have a narrative. Rihanna is the star image in this video, always being shown which also promotes the song. The target audience, I think would mainly be teenagers and the dancing and colours would attract them, also the fact that Rihanna performs in the video would attract audiences.
